Course Description:

The course will be divided into five parts. In part I it will overview the development of international trade in services. Part II will introduce students the basic structure of the General Agreement on Trade in services (GATS), and how it applies to measures that affect trade in services. Part III will review the basic economics of service trade. It will discuss the sources of potential welfare as well as the effects of liberalization on income distribution in the trade in services. It will analyze the effects of some of the most common barriers to trade in services. Part IV focuses on statistics of trade in services. Part V is about methods of measurement of services barriers and methods of measuring the Economic consequences of Liberalizing Services Barriers. Part VI will analysis the development of selected service sectors.
