Course Description:

 

This course is for sophomore students.  It will be an extension of the Oral English classes the students took in their freshman year.  The course covers basic business ideas and vocabulary.  The course is designed to improve the students’ communication skills.  Part of the course will involve the skillsand knowledge required for students to conduct a successful business interview.  Another part will cover the comprehension of material in various chapters of the textbook, but will focus on ways to improve the students’ communication skills while teaching the material.

Objective:
This course aims to introduce students to conversational English.It will focus on the skills needed to listen, understand and respond appropriately in English.These skills will be taught from the perspective of a person conducting business in an international organization.  Speaking &Listeninghas been designed to meet the following objectives:
Upon completion students should be able to:
1.Approach a business interview with confidence.
2.Better comprehend questions posed to them in English.
3.Speak with increased confidence in business or other situations.
4.Use their vocabulary to discuss a wide range of business topics
 
Upon completion students should have:
5.Practised listening, understanding and correctly responding to questions without preparation.
6.Practiced presenting their ideas in a professional manner.
7.Improved their business vocabulary and their confidence in speaking.
8.A more detailed understanding of the interview process.
9.A basic understanding of communication in a western business environment.
Most importantly this course is meant to improve the students’ abilities to communicate in English.  This is about teaching skills not knowledge.The skills to listen properly, understand as much as possible from what they have heard, formulate ideas and opinions, and be able to verbally explain them using their English vocabulary.
 Focus:
1.Improve students’ communication skills – this includes speaking, but more importantly listening and understanding what they are listening to – so that they can offer an intelligent response to questions asked or topics discussed
2.Build confidence in the students’ ability to listen and understand
3.Improve students’ vocabulary so they have a better understanding of some basic business concepts that are common in an international business setting     
4.Students should be able to carry on a simple conversation on some very basic business ideas
 Grades:
60% participation - (attendance, actual participation in class, quizzes, assignments and homework)part of the students participation grades should come from testing their attention and listening abilities while their classmates are speaking, maybe during the mid-term and
final exams or other activities during class
20% mid-term exam – motivational speech
20%final exam – presentation based on B.E. mid-term presentation (see handout)
