Course Description:

 

This course is designed to increase students’ knowledge and expertise of business concepts. The course covers basic business ideas and vocabulary. The course will focus on the comprehension of material covered in various chapters of the textbook.  
Objective:
This course aims introduce students to English language skills regularly used in western business contexts.  Business Englishhas been designed to meet the following objectives:
Upon completion students should be able to:
1.Appropriately use business related vocabulary and concepts necessary for success in further study or the workplace.
2.Comprehend a variety of business readings; assess the information in the readings and make extrapolations based on that information.
3.Speak with increased confidence in business or other meetings.
4.Use advanced language structures in both writing and speaking.
 Upon completion students should have:
5.Practised speaking, listening, and critical thinking skills.
6.Practiced presenting in a business environment.
7.Improved their business vocabulary and their reading comprehension.
8.A basic understanding of the idioms and expressions used in a western business context.
9.A basic understanding of western business culture.
Focus:
1) Improve students’ business vocabulary – allow students to better understand and recognize words, terms and phrases commonly used in an English business setting
2) Improve students’ confidence to not only understand but discuss and present basic business ideas
3) Improve students’ knowledge of the business concepts discussed.  The students should not only know the vocabulary terms, but understand their meanings and how they are used in a business setting
4) Students should be able to read and comprehend very simple business articles.
Grades:
60% participation (attendance, actual participation in class, quizzes, assignments and homework)
20% mid-term exam – group presentation (see handout)
20% final exam – written
